Cakebread Cellars Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2021 750ml

Jack and Dolores Cakebread founded their family winery in Rutherford in 1973, and Sauvignon Blanc was one of their first plantings.

The 2021 was labelled Napa Valley; from 2023 the wine is labelled North Coast. Retailers quoting the 2021 notes say the fruit came from estate sites in Carneros, Suscol Springs, Rutherford and Calistoga, that most of it fermented in stainless steel with a little in concrete eggs, and that it spent five months in neutral French oak, so it stays fresh rather than oaky.

The winery describes fresh citrus, grapefruit and melon, then green pear, fresh-cut hay and stony minerality, with a light body and bright citrus acidity.

This 2021 is at the end of its window, so drink it soon, chilled, with crab, scallops or a goat cheese salad.
