Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Le Petit Ducru Saint-Julien 2019 750ml

Le Petit Ducru is the third wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, an 1855 Second Growth in Saint-Julien owned by the Borie family since 1941 and run by Bruno Borie. The 2019 is the first vintage under this name; the wine was formerly sold as Château Lalande-Borie.

Fruit comes from about 25 hectares on the western side of Saint-Julien, plus young Ducru vines and declassified lots. The 2019 is 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, aged 12 months in French oak, 30% of it new. It's 14.5% alcohol, under cork.

Critics describe a medium- to full-bodied, creamy, plush red with currant, blackberry, plum and cherry, pencil shavings and violets. James Suckling notes walnut and stone undertones, and Jeb Dunnuck finds classic Saint-Julien elegance and purity.

Against Chateau d’Armailhac 2005, Le Petit Ducru is younger, Merlot-led and far less expensive; for a classified-estate Saint-Julien to open on a weeknight, choose Le Petit Ducru.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous gives a drinking window of 2025 to 2039. Serve it with roast lamb or steak frites.
