Cloudy Bay is the wine that put Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on the world map. David Hohnen founded it in 1985, and it's now part of Moët Hennessy.
The fruit comes mainly from the Wairau Valley, around Rapaura, Renwick and the Brancott Valley, from blocks such as Estate, Motukawa, Widow's Block and Red Shed. Each vineyard is fermented separately and the final blend is chosen from more than 90 batches. Cloudy Bay's barrel-fermented Sauvignon, Te Koko, is a separate wine.
The winery describes honeydew melon, passionfruit, citrus and a hint of blackcurrant leaf, with a saline, sea-air freshness and makrut lime, lemongrass and grapefruit peel.
Against Kim Crawford, Cloudy Bay is more concentrated and layered; for a gift or a special dinner, choose Cloudy Bay.
Serve it at 8 to 10°C with oysters, sashimi, mussels or goat's cheese. The winery says it can be cellared for years.
