Elena Walch is a family estate in Tramin, in Italy's Alto Adige. Elena, an architect, married into one of the region's oldest wine families, and her daughters Julia and Karoline, the fifth generation, are taking over. The estate earned Italy's VIVA sustainability certification in 2024.
The 2024 Sauvignon is estate fruit, hand-picked from southeast- and southwest-facing calcareous, sandy sites. It ferments in stainless steel at 19°C and rests several months on fine lees. It's dry, with almost no residual sugar, and comes under cork.
The estate describes a deep yellow color with green hints, ripe gooseberry, papaya, elderberry and fine herbs, juicy acidity and an inviting finish.
Against Cloudy Bay, this is cooler and more herbal, a mountain style; with Italian food, choose Elena Walch.
The estate says to serve it at 12 to 14°C, a little warmer than most whites.
