Michter's US*1 Limited Release Toasted Barrel Finish Rye Whiskey 750ml

Michter's starts this one with its US*1 Kentucky straight rye at barrel strength, then puts it into a second barrel built from wood air-dried for 24 months and toasted but not charred.

Toasting without charring changes what the oak gives. There's no extra layer of char to filter the whiskey, so the wood's sugars come through instead: chocolate, vanilla and honey over the rye spice, roasted nuts and dates, and a finish like the burnt sugar on a crème brûlée, with a wisp of campfire smoke. The first release came out in September 2017 after two years of work by Michter's maturation team, and each release since has been limited and bottled at barrel strength, so the proof shifts a little.

For the base whiskey at an everyday strength, the US*1 Single Barrel Rye is the place to start; this is the dessert version.
