Pinhook Flagship Straight Rye Whiskey 750ml

Pinhook bottles its flagship rye as a vintage: each year's batch is blended to its own profile, and when it's gone it isn't remade. The whiskey is distilled and aged entirely at Castle & Key in Frankfort, Kentucky.

The mash is 60% rye, 20% corn and 20% malted barley, aged at least two years and bottled unfiltered at about 97 proof. The corn and barley give a rounder rye than the 95% mash bills: cherry, baked apple and toffee come first, then black pepper and clove.

For a young rye with more fruit than most, this is good value. For an older, oakier rye at a similar price, choose Knob Creek 7 Year.

Try it in a Whiskey Smash with mint and lemon, or neat with a splash of water.

Since each vintage is a little different, it's worth tasting again when the next year's batch arrives.
