Ramazzotti Amaro 750ml

Ausano Ramazzotti created this amaro in Milan in 1815. Its 33 herbs, spices, flowers and fruits include orange peel, cinchona, rhubarb, gentian, rosemary, myrrh and turmeric, and it is bottled at 30%.

It looks dark and inky but drinks sweet and gentle: ripe plum, dark berries and cola, a spiced finish and only a faint bitter edge.

Ramazzotti sits between Amaro Montenegro and Averna: darker and fruitier than the first, lighter than the second, and the best value of the three.

Ramazzotti's own serve is 40 ml over four or five ice cubes with cucumber and ginger. It is also good neat with a twist of lemon, or lengthened with club soda. A splash also deepens a Manhattan made with rye, in place of some of the vermouth.
