Smoke Wagon 9 Year Experimental Straight Rye Whiskey Barrel Char E 750ml

In 2013 MGP in Indiana ran an experiment: an unusual mash of 51% rye and 49% malted barley, filled into just 22 barrels across four char levels. Smoke Wagon, the Las Vegas whiskey brand, bottled them after nine years, labelled by barrel type.

This is the E barrel: char #3 on the staves and char #2 on the heads. The near-even split of rye and malted barley makes a rounder, maltier rye than the usual high-rye recipes, and the medium char gives oak depth without burying the grain. Bold spice, oak and a rich, layered palate.
