Stags' Leap Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2021 750ml

Stags' Leap traces its site to 1872, when the Grigsby family planted it. Carl Doumani later built a cult following for its Petite Sirah before selling to Beringer in 1996, and Beringer is now part of Treasury Wine Estates.

The 2021 is 88% Petite Sirah, 8% Grenache, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Merlot and 1% Carignan. Fruit comes from estate vineyards on deep, rocky soils plus sites in Calistoga, St. Helena, Oakville, Oak Knoll, Coombsville and the Stags Leap District. After 9 to 12 days of maceration it spent 15 months in American oak, about a fifth of it new. It's 14.7% alcohol and sealed with a cork.

The winery describes bramble berry, blackberry pie, boysenberry, black plum and black-cherry cobbler, with graham cracker, lavender and thyme, juicy acidity, firm tannins and restrained oak.

Against Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif, the Stags' Leap is the Napa Valley bottling and costs less; for a structured Napa Petite Sirah, choose Stags' Leap.

James Suckling calls it a wine to drink or hold. Serve it with grilled steak, which Wine Enthusiast also suggests.
