Sofia is a sparkling line from Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Sonoma County, named for the director's daughter, Sofia Coppola. The line began with a Blanc de Blancs about 25 years ago, and the Brut Rosé followed in 2017. Delicato Family Wines bought the Coppola portfolio in 2021.
The fruit comes from Monterey County. Sources differ: the 2017 launch release described Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made in the style of a French Crémant, while wine writer Marnie Old, in the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2024, describes Monterey County Pinot Noir made by the Charmat, or tank, method. It's 12% alcohol.
Astor Wines calls it crisp, with red fruits and a creamy texture. The Inquirer finds fresh raspberry and lemon with a dry finish, and the launch release listed red currant, pomegranate, strawberry, peach and spice.
Against Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé, Sofia is the everyday bottle at well under half the price; for a party or a weeknight toast, choose Sofia.
The launch release suggests cheese, charcuterie, shellfish and spicy Asian dishes. Serve it well chilled.
