Wild Turkey 101 Rye Whiskey

Wild Turkey 101 Rye is the distillery's straight rye at the same strength as its famous bourbon, 101 proof, made in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

Vanilla comes through first, then brown sugar and butterscotch over a dry, spicy body. For a 101-proof whiskey it drinks smoothly, and a splash of water softens the alcohol and brings up more vanilla. The finish runs long.

It's the rye to use when a Manhattan or Old Fashioned has to stand up to ice and dilution. For the barrel-proof version, pick up Rare Breed Rye; for a softer, cheaper mixer, Old Overholt.

Stir it with sweet vermouth and Angostura, or shake it into a Whiskey Sour with plenty of lemon. At this proof it carries egg white well.

Over a single large ice cube it makes an easy, spicy sipper too.
