Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2022 750ml

Château de Saint Cosme sits in Gigondas, below the Dentelles de Montmirail, and the Barruol family has held it since 1490, now in its fifteenth generation. The winery has Gallo-Roman fermentation vats cut into the rock.

This is the estate's flagship Gigondas, separate from its single-vineyard cuvées. It comes from 25 hectares of organically farmed old vines, averaging 60 years, on limestone marl and sand in a cool, late-ripening site. Recent vintages are about 70% Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah and a little Cinsault, aged about 12 months in casks and concrete. Fermentation is whole-cluster with native yeasts, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

For a recent vintage, the estate describes pencil lead, red berry fruit and ash.

Against Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2021, Saint Cosme is whole-cluster Gigondas from cool limestone slopes; for an old-vine, unfiltered Southern Rhône at a similar price, choose Saint Cosme.

Decant it for an hour and serve it with roast lamb, grilled sausages, duck or mushroom dishes.
