Diamond Collection is the California range of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, Sonoma County, the wine business of the film director.
The current Chardonnay uses grapes grown across California. Earlier bottlings carried a Gold Label and a Monterey County appellation, so you may still see that version. Parts of the wine are aged about seven months in French and American oak, which adds vanilla and toast without hiding the fruit. It's 13.5% alcohol.
The winery describes baking spice, stone fruit and toasted oak on the nose, then citrus, melon and vanilla on a lush, balanced palate with bright natural acidity.
Against Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve, Coppola Diamond is a little lighter and costs less; for an everyday California Chardonnay with a touch of oak, choose Coppola.
The winery suggests roast chicken or grilled salmon. It also works with crab cakes, pasta in a light cream sauce or a cheese board. Serve it chilled.
