Wine Spectator named the 2021 Don Melchor its No. 1 Wine of the Year in 2024. It's Chile's benchmark Cabernet, from the Puente Alto vineyard in the Maipo Valley.
Viña Don Melchor is part of Concha y Toro. Enrique Tirado has run it since 1997 and chooses the blend each year with Bordeaux consultant Eric Boissenot. The vineyard has stony soils and old vines. The 2021 is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot. It spent 15 months in French oak, 68% of it new, then aged another year before release. It's 14.5% alcohol.
Tirado calls the 2021 very expressive: concentrated, dense and long.
For a top Bordeaux-style Cabernet, this costs less than many Napa cult names. It's the bottle to buy for a collector, or to keep for a big anniversary.
Drink it from 2026 through about 2040. Decant it for two hours if you open it now, and serve it with a rib roast or lamb.
It's also listed with our fine and rare wine, and the rest of our Cabernet Sauvignon is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
