Far Niente is a historic estate in Oakville, Napa Valley, known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Winemaker Nicole Marchesi makes the wines, with Andrew Delos as vice president of winemaking.

The house style skips malolactic fermentation, which keeps the wine fresh rather than buttery. In the 2023, the grapes came from cool vineyards in Carneros and Coombsville; 89% of the wine fermented in barrel and 11% in tank, then it rested six months on its lees in French oak, 45% new.

For the 2024 the winery describes melon, citrus blossom, ripe peach and pear with hints of vanilla and toasted hazelnut, then grilled citrus and a stony note over a creamy texture, with lively acidity.

Against Rombauer, Far Niente is crisper and more polished, with no buttery edge; for a fresh, age-worthy Napa Chardonnay, choose Far Niente.

It's good young and can develop for five to eight years. Serve it lightly chilled with lobster, scallops or roast chicken.
