Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

Hess Select is the everyday Cabernet from Hess Persson Estates, the family company behind The Hess Collection in Napa. It's sourced from grower families across California, and since the 2020 vintage the label has said California rather than North Coast.

In the current release, the blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Petite Sirah and a little Malbec. The wine spends 18 months in a mix of French and American oak, about a quarter of it new. That's a long time in barrel for a bottle at this price. It's 13.5% alcohol.

The winery describes vanilla and warm baking spice, blackberry, black cherry and a hint of cassis, with toasty oak, fine tannins and a long finish.

For a step up from the same family, the Hess Allomi Napa Valley is a single-vineyard wine. For a weeknight, this is the better buy.

Serve it a little below room temperature. Hess suggests grilled sirloin skewers.
