Hugel Gentil 2024 is a dry white blend from Alsace in northeastern France, made from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Muscat and bottled at 12% alcohol in a 750ml bottle.
The Hugel family has made wine in Riquewihr since 1639. Gentil revives an old Alsace tradition of blending the region's noble grapes under that name. The grapes are picked by hand from mostly clay and limestone vineyards in and around Riquewihr, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats. The wine clears naturally over the winter and is bottled in spring. Since 2009, every bottle has been sealed with a DIAM closure to avoid cork taint.
It shows citrus and a hint of rose on the nose, then a slender, bone-dry palate led by lemon, with lively acidity. Vinous calls the 2024 superbly refreshing.
Each grape adds something: spice from Gewurztraminer, body from Pinot Gris, finesse from Riesling, a floral lift from Muscat and freshness from Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner.
Serve it chilled with oysters, sushi, quiche, Thai dishes or a cheese board.
