Schplink is made for the New York importer Communal Brands by Weingut Norbert Bauer in the Pulkautal, in Austria's Weinviertel. The Bauer family estate dates to 1721, and Norbert and Gisela Bauer, the 11th generation, farm 90 hectares.
It's 100% Grüner Veltliner from vines planted between 1982 and 2005 on clay, loess and limestone. The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, given 12 hours on the skins, then fermented spontaneously and cool in stainless steel over 22 days. The importer calls the farming sustainable, with organic vineyard practices, and lists the wine as vegan. Retailers give 12.5% alcohol. The 3-liter box holds about four bottles.
The importer calls it aromatic, young and fresh. Retailer Cream Wine describes it as dry and crisp, with bright citrus acidity.
Against Berger Grüner Veltliner 1L, Schplink holds three times as much wine; for a party, a beach day or a week of glasses, choose Schplink.
Cream Wine pitches it for the patio, park, beach or boat. Keep it in the fridge; pour it with salads, schnitzel, sushi or fried chicken.
