Weingut Erich & Maria Berger is a family estate in Gedersdorf, in the eastern Kremstal of Austria. Erich Berger runs it with his son Max, who also bottles wine under his own label. In the US the wines are imported by Skurnik.
This is the estate's liter of Grüner Veltliner. The vineyards sit on loess and on deep brown soils with gravel and marl, and Terry Theise says the liter includes a good share of purchased fruit. It's fermented entirely in stainless steel with no oak; one retailer adds that it uses cultured yeast and a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. It's 12.5% alcohol.
Skurnik calls it highly drinkable, with more clarity than is typical for a liter. Terry Theise found a jasmine-like aroma in the 2023, with body and the grape's typical bite on the finish.
Against H&M Hofer Grüner Veltliner, Berger costs $5 less for the same liter size; for an everyday house Grüner on a budget, choose Berger.
One retailer suggests serving it at 48 to 52°F. Pour it with schnitzel, salads or takeout.
