King Estate farms its own vineyard in the Willamette Valley AVA, near Eugene, Oregon. The vineyard is certified Biodynamic, a standard adopted in 2016.
The Artisan Series Pinot Gris is 100% Pinot Gris from estate-grown Biodynamic fruit. It's fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged four months on its lees. The 2024 season brought a cool spring, heat in June and July, and a September of record heat and cool spells, with harvest from 9 September to 17 October. It's 13.5% alcohol.
The winery describes green apple, pear and gooseberry with honeysuckle and white violet, hints of ginger and Meyer lemon, a full body and a long finish, with fruit and acidity in balance. Critic Owen Bargreen calls it very mineral-laden, with terrific freshness and tension.
Against A to Z Wineworks Oregon Pinot Gris, King Estate is a single-estate, Biodynamic, lees-aged wine; for a fuller Pinot Gris for the table, choose King Estate.
Serve it chilled with roast chicken, pork, salmon or creamy pasta. Owen Bargreen suggests drinking it from 2025 to 2031.
