Tiefenbrunner is a family estate in South Tyrol, based at Schlosskellerei Turmhof in Entiklar, Kurtatsch, with Castel Turmhof as its historic seat. Wine Review Online reported in 2021 that the family owns more than 60 acres and buys grapes from about 40 growers.
The Pinot Grigio belongs to the estate's Merus line, its classic entry range: grapes from Unterland vineyards, fermented in steel and concrete, with no oak. The producer's Merus page lists 100% Pinot Grigio from valley-floor vineyards at Margreid, Punggl and Kurtinig, on sandy, calcareous alluvial soils. Export bottlings have been labeled Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT in recent vintages. This bottle is 12.5% alcohol.
The producer describes a pale yellow to sand color, a subtle nose of pear and candied fruit, and a dry, full-bodied, harmonious palate with a round finish.
Against Cavit Pinot Grigio, Tiefenbrunner is a family-estate Alpine Pinot Grigio with more body; for a dinner-table white with texture, choose Tiefenbrunner.
The producer suggests light starters, fish and South Tyrolean dishes. Serve it chilled.
