After more than a decade away, Laphroaig brought back a permanent 15 year old. It is matured entirely in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and is not chill-filtered.
Expect grapefruit and orange peel on the nose with hay, vanilla fudge, charred oak and barbecue smoke. The palate brings briny smoke, black pepper and peat, then cinnamon, peach, citrus oil and vanilla cream, finishing with ash, sea salt and grapefruit zest. VinePair (Aaron Goldfarb) gives it 93 points, noting the extra five years soften the peat of the flagship 10 year old.
If Laphroaig 10 is a little fierce for you, the 15 keeps the smoke and sea air but adds fruit and sweetness.
