Protea Chenin Blanc 750ml

Protea is the fresh, approachable range from Anthonij Rupert Wyne, the Rupert family winery based at L'Ormarins in Franschhoek, South Africa, owned by Johann Rupert.

This is 100% Chenin Blanc from the Western Cape. The grapes are hand-harvested, and each parcel is vinified separately: de-stemmed, whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight, then fermented in stainless steel and aged on fine lees for two to three months. There is no oak. It's dry, at 13.5% alcohol. The bottle, designed by Mark Eisen, is sealed with an Amorim Helix stopper, a cork you twist off by hand and twist back in.

Expect apricot, peach and nectarine with chamomile and citrus peel, fresh acidity and a chalky texture from the lees contact.

Against Marqués de Riscal Verdejo, Protea leans to stone fruit rather than herbs; for a peachy, unoaked white you can reseal without a corkscrew, choose Protea.

Pour it with grilled vegetables, goat cheese, roast chicken or simple fish.
