Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Anderson Valley Brut 2017 750ml

Roederer Estate is the California estate of Champagne Louis Roederer, growing its own fruit in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County. L'Ermitage is its prestige vintage cuvée, made only in top years.

The 2017 is 52% Chardonnay, 46% Pinot Noir and 2% Pinot Meunier, made by the traditional method from the cuvée pressing only. The dosage, 7.5 g/L, is reserve wine from 2012 aged in French oak casks. It was disgorged in January 2023 and rested six months or more on the cork. The producer gives 13.2% alcohol.

The producer describes fine bubbles and a lasting mousse, butter pastry and Asian pear on the nose, and a broad entry with quince-like freshness and a soft finish, with the warm vintage adding power and richness.

Against Argyle Extended Tirage Brut 2012, L'Ermitage is the Anderson Valley bottling with an oak-aged reserve dosage; for a Champagne house's California prestige cuvée, choose L'Ermitage.

Wine Spectator suggests drinking it now through 2027, while James Suckling says drink or hold. Serve it well chilled with shellfish or roast chicken.
