Hillside Select comes from Shafer's 54-acre, south-facing Hillside Vineyard above the Stags Leap estate, on thin, stony volcanic soils. The 2015 was made during the family's ownership, before the 2022 sale.
John and Betty Shafer bought the Stags Leap property in 1972, and Elias Fernandez is the winemaker. The 2015 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and spent up to 32 months in new French oak. It's 15.5% alcohol.
Critics describe cassis, black cherry, plum preserves and Indian spice, full-bodied and boldly fruited, with a firm frame of tannin.
Ten years on, it's entering its drinking window, while the 2016 still needs time. Buy the 2015 to open sooner.
Stand the bottle up a day before, then decant it for two hours. Serve it with prime rib or lamb.
It's also listed with our fine and rare wine, and the rest of our Cabernet Sauvignon is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
