Stags' Leap Winery made its first vintage in 1893. For its Viognier it picks grapes from cooler sites in the Carneros and Oak Knoll areas of southern Napa, where sun ripens the fruit and marine fog keeps the acidity fresh. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented in neutral French oak barrels, then aged on the lees for four to five months with weekly stirring. The winery skips malolactic fermentation to keep the floral aromas and crisp acidity.
Expect white peach, nectarine and lime with jasmine and honeysuckle, a creamy texture from the lees, and a dry finish with a hint of almond and spice.
For Chardonnay drinkers it is a good change of pace: just as round, but more fragrant.
