Artemis is named for the Greek goddess of the hunt, a nod to how Stag's Leap Wine Cellars searches Napa for fruit to blend with its own estate grapes. It is the winery's Napa Valley Cabernet.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has been wholly owned by Marchesi Antinori since 2023. The 2022 is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Most of the fruit, 73%, comes from Atlas Peak. It spent 15 months in French oak, 55% of it new. A late heat wave in 2022 brought riper fruit and softer acidity.

The winery describes dark fruit, tobacco, ripe fig and cherry compote, then a silky palate and a long, savory finish of milk chocolate, dark cherry and boysenberry. It's 14.8% alcohol.

Don't confuse it with Stags’ Leap Winery, a different producer with a similar name. For a dinner where the wine should impress, this is the one.

Its tannins are soft for a young Napa Cab, so it drinks well now. The winery suggests grilled tri-tip or braised short ribs.

Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with precise, superfine tannins and layers of cherry, blackberry, graphite, and perfumed violets building toward a finish full of energy, drive, and tension. Ideal for enjoying on its own before a meal and throughout dinner. The tannins in this vintage are notably gentle and approachable, making it an excellent candidate for early drinking."
