Hibiki 21 Year Japanese Whisky 100th Anniversary Limited Edition 2023 700ml

Suntory marked its 100th year in 2023 with this limited version of Hibiki 21, blended by chief blender Shinji Fukuyo with a much stronger hand of Mizunara, Japanese oak, than the standard 21.

Mizunara is a difficult wood: porous, slow to mature, and expensive. Given time it brings a scent that people describe as temple incense or sandalwood, and that's the point of this edition. Kumquat and jasmine on the nose with a hint of incense, a gently sweet, floral palate with sandalwood and agarwood spice, and a long finish of spiced Mizunara wood. It's bottled at 43%.

This is a collector's bottle. To taste the regular blend at a fraction of the price, the standard Hibiki 21 Year is the comparison.

Pour a small measure neat into a tulip glass and give it ten minutes before the first sip.
