Yamazaki was Japan's first malt whisky distillery, founded in 1923 between Kyoto and Osaka, and the 12 Year is its flagship. The malts are aged in American, Spanish and Japanese Mizunara oak, and the Mizunara is what gives it the incense and coconut notes that mark Yamazaki out.
Peach, pineapple and grapefruit lead the nose, with clove, candied orange and vanilla; the palate is rich and smooth with coconut, cranberry and butter; the finish is long and sweet with ginger and cinnamon. It's bottled at 43%.
If you want one bottle that shows what Japanese single malt is about, this is it. For a lighter, younger Yamazaki, try the Distiller's Reserve; for something older and darker, the 18 Year.
Sip it neat or with a few drops of water. In Japan it's also poured as a highball, which shows off the fruit.
We carry it in the 750ml size. The rest of the range is on our Yamazaki page. More bottles are under Japanese whisky, and the rest of our whiskey is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
