Hakushu is Suntory's forest distillery, built in 1973 high in the Southern Japanese Alps at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake, and the 12 Year is its fresh, green single malt.
The cool mountain air and soft water show up in the glass. Fresh apple and pear with vanilla and honey on the nose, the same fruit on the palate with a wave of gentle peat smoke, and a crisp, herbal finish. It's bottled at 43%.
For a light, lightly smoky Japanese single malt, this is our pick. For a richer, fruitier Suntory malt, choose Yamazaki 12; for the older Hakushu, the 18 Year.
In Japan it's often served as a highball with a sprig of mint, which brings out the green notes. Neat, add a few drops of water.
We carry it in the 750ml size. More bottles are under Japanese whisky, and the rest of our whiskey is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
