Nikka From the Barrel Japanese Whisky 102.8 Proof 750ml

Nikka From the Barrel was designed in 1985 and only reached the US in 2018. It's a blend of malt and grain whiskies that, once mixed, go back into casks for a second spell of marrying, then are bottled at 51.4%, far stronger than most blends.

That extra strength and time give it weight. Dried fruit, caramel, vanilla and baking spice on the nose; toffee, dark chocolate, candied orange and clove on the palate, with a little smoke; and a long, warming finish.

Buy it for the bourbon drinker; it has the punch they're used to. For a softer Nikka, try Coffey Grain.

Add a few drops of water to open it up, or use it in a stirred drink where it won't get lost.
