Felino is the everyday range from Viña Cobos, the Mendoza winery Paul Hobbs founded in 1999. Hobbs made his name with California Cabernet, and he applies the same thinking to Argentine fruit at a much lower price.
The 2023 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from two parts of Mendoza: warmer Luján de Cuyo and the high, cool Valle de Uco, between about 2,300 and 3,900 feet. The grapes are picked by hand, fermented in stainless steel and bottled unfined. Only 9% of the wine saw oak, 12 months in new French barrels, so the fruit leads.
The winery describes cherries and red fruit, a roasted note and black pepper, in a pure, rounded wine with a long finish.
Argentina is better known for Malbec, but this is the bottle to buy if you want a Cabernet under $20 that tastes like more. It keeps well, too, with a drinking window running to 2034.
Serve it around 60 to 64°F. The winery suggests skirt steak, pasta with tomato sauce or a semi-hard cheese.
More bottles are in our wines under $20, and every Cabernet Sauvignon is listed together. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
