Clos du Val was founded in 1972 and is still family-owned. Its estate vineyards are Hirondelle in the Stags Leap District and Riverbend in Yountville, and this is its main Napa Valley Cabernet, well below the price of its Estate wine.
Carmel Greenberg makes the wine. The 2022 is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, from vines over 30 years old on gravelly clay loam. It spent 12 months in French oak, 30% new. A September heat wave and slow ripening into late October shaped the vintage. It's 14.2% alcohol.
The importer describes black fruit, cedar and leather on the nose, then blackcurrant, wood spice and graphite, with well-structured tannins and bright acidity.
For a balanced, not-too-heavy Napa Cabernet, choose this. Groth Oakville is the richer alternative.
It drinks now and should improve for about a decade. Serve with roast lamb or a ribeye.
