Far Niente Estate Bottled Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 750ml

Far Niente was founded in 1885, abandoned during Prohibition and restored by Gil Nickel in 1979. Its Estate Bottled Cabernet comes mainly from the Martin Stelling Vineyard behind the winery in Oakville.

Nicole Marchesi made the 2017. It is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec, grown on gravelly loam and picked through October. It spent 17 months in French oak, 68% new. It's 14.5% alcohol.

The winery describes mixed berry, chocolate, light earth and licorice, then a velvety mid-palate of plum and blackberry, firm, age-worthy tannins and integrated toasted oak.

It's the house's flagship. The sister winery's Nickel & Nickel Branding Iron is a single-vineyard 100% Cab from the same town; buy Far Niente for the classic blend.

Wine Spectator gave it a window to 2032. Decant it for an hour and serve it with a rib roast or lamb.
