Wine Spectator named the 2016 Groth Reserve No. 4 in its Top 100 Wines of 2019. The Reserve is the Groth family's top Cabernet, from their estate in Oakville.
The Reserve comes from Groth's Reserve Block in Oakville, under 28 of the family's 165 Napa acres, on an old alluvial fan of Yolo loam and gravel. The 2016 is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Merlot. The lots age separately for eight months in new French oak, then are blended and aged 14 months more. About 4,800 cases were made. It's 14.2% alcohol.
Wine Spectator's note describes a tightly focused core of cassis, raspberry and bitter cherry, with incense and tobacco on the finish.
It's a big step up from the Groth Oakville 2021. Buy the Reserve for a milestone dinner or a collector.
Wine Spectator gives it until 2038. Decant it for an hour and serve with a rib roast.
It's also listed with our fine and rare wine, and the rest of our Cabernet Sauvignon is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
