Kavalan Distillery Select Single Malt Whisky 750ml

Kavalan distils in Yilan, on the subtropical east coast of Taiwan, where heat and humidity mature whisky far faster than a Scottish warehouse. Distillery Select is its approachable, everyday single malt.

It's aged in a mix of casks chosen to show the distillery's fruity house style. The nose is silky, with ripe tropical fruit, flowers and warm vanilla; the palate is round and easy, with butterscotch, toffee and vanilla; and the finish is long and sweet. It's bottled at 43%.

It's a good introduction to Taiwanese whisky, and lighter than most sherried Speyside malts. For Kavalan's port-finished malt, try Concertmaster; for a richer, sherried bottle, Oloroso Sherry Oak.

Sip it neat or over one cube, or make a highball with very cold soda and a twist of grapefruit.
