Merryvale says it was the first winery built in Napa after Prohibition. The Schlatter family has owned it for more than 30 years, and this is the Napa Valley Cabernet from its Classics range.

René Schlatter is proprietor and Andrew Wright is winemaker at the St. Helena winery, which has four estate vineyards across three Napa appellations. This wine draws on a range of Napa Valley sites, soils and climates.

The winery describes layers of fresh fruit and savory notes, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins, and sums it up as finesse and power.

For a classic Napa Cabernet with a firm structure, choose this. For a softer, rounder style at a similar price, try Hall.

Decant it for an hour; James Suckling found it tightly wound. Serve it with lamb or a strip steak.
