Over half the fruit in Sequoia Grove's 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet comes from the Rutherford Bench, including the winery's own estate and the Tonella and Morisoli vineyards. Rutherford is where the dusty, cocoa-like tannins come from.

James and Barbara Allen founded the winery in Rutherford in 1978 and named it for the two big sequoias at the entrance. The Kopf family has owned it since 2002, and Jesse Fox makes the wine. The 2022 is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. It spent 18 months in French oak, 60% of it new. A Labor Day heat wave brought an early harvest. It's 14.9% alcohol.

The winery describes cherry, pomegranate, pluot and bramble, then dried herbs and black raspberry, and a finish of blackberry jam, black pepper and tobacco.

For a real Rutherford Cabernet at this price, buy this. Silverado Estate is the alternative from east of the valley.

Aged for 18 months in 55% new French oak, this is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with richly textured, velvety tannins that frame an attractive profile of cassis, black cherry, and plum fruit. Nuances of warm red baking spices, leather, fine pipe tobacco, espresso bean, and dark cacao add complexity. At the same time, the hallmark Rutherford loamy earth character is prominent on the nose and palate. With good concentration, freshness, and energy, this wine is delicious straight from the bottle and well-suited for both immediate enjoyment and further ageing"
