One Point Five is named for "a generation and a half": John Shafer and his son Doug. It is the estate's Cabernet below Hillside Select, made largely from the same hillsides.
Elias Fernandez made the 2021 from Shafer's estate hillside vineyards, the Borderline vineyard in the Stags Leap District and selected Napa Valley sites. It is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot and 1% Malbec, aged 20 months in new French oak. It's 15.3% alcohol. The Shafer family sold the winery to Korea's Shinsegae group in 2022.
The winery describes black cherry, crème de cassis, black plum, lavender and savory herbs, with richness balanced by integrated tannins.
For Shafer's style at less than half the price of Hillside Select, buy this.
James Suckling suggests waiting until 2026, so it's just ready. Decant it for two hours and serve it with lamb.
