Bota Box Nighthawk Black Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon 3L

When Bota Box launched this wine in 2019, it billed it as the first bourbon-barrel-aged Cabernet sold in alternative packaging. It's the premium Nighthawk line, aged in barrels that once held bourbon.

Bota Box Vineyards, part of Delicato Family Wines, makes it in Manteca, California. Newer boxes call it Nighthawk Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon, without the word Black. The 3L box holds the same as four 750ml bottles and keeps fresh for up to a month after opening. It's 14.5% alcohol.

The winery describes rich, dark, jammy fruit with caramel, toasted oak and vanilla, which is the bourbon barrel talking.

Bourbon-barrel Cabs are sweeter and toastier than standard ones. If you like that style in a bottle, try Robert Mondavi’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged; for a party, the box is better value.

Serve it a little cool, around 60°F, with steak or barbecue. Keep the opened box out of direct sun.
