This Cabernet finishes with three months in American oak barrels that once held bourbon whiskey. That short stay adds a toasty sweetness, and that sweetness is why people buy it.
Robert Mondavi Private Selection started in 1994. The grapes for this wine come from California's Central Coast and Lodi. It sits in the brand's barrel-aged line next to a Rum Barrel-Aged Merlot and a Rye Barrel-Aged Red Blend. Since June 2025 the brand has been owned by The Wine Group.
The winery describes dark mixed berries, blackberry cobbler and graham cracker, with coffee and toasty oak and a long, lush finish. It's 14.5% alcohol.
If you like this style, also try Beringer Bros Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet; the two are close. For a Cab without the barrel sweetness, choose almost anything else in our Cabernet Sauvignon.
It's a barbecue wine. The winery suggests bourbon-glazed ribs, smoked brisket or steak. Serve it cool, around 60°F, so the sweetness doesn't get heavy.
