Duval-Leroy is a family house in Vertus, in the Côte des Blancs, founded in 1859. Carol Duval-Leroy led it for decades and has handed it to her sons, and Sandrine Logette-Jardin, cellar master since 2005, was Champagne's first woman in the role.
Grand Brut is the house's non-vintage Brut as labelled for this market, and its description matches the house Brut Réserve: a Pinot Noir-led blend with Meunier and Chardonnay from about 15 crus, with reserve wines for depth. The house ages it 30 to 36 months on the lees.
The house describes dark chocolate, cinnamon and roasted yellow fig, with a melt-in-the-mouth, vinous texture.
Next to Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut, Duval-Leroy is rounder and more vinous; with roast chicken or pork, choose Duval-Leroy.
Serve it at 8 to 10°C, as an aperitif or with white meats, as the house suggests.
