Ruinart, founded in Reims in 1729, calls itself the first Champagne house, and its chalk cellars 38 meters underground are UNESCO-listed. Chardonnay is its specialty, and this clear bottle is the flagship.
Blanc de Blancs is all Chardonnay from about 25 to 30 crus, mainly in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, with 20 to 30% reserve wines. It ages two to three years and is finished with 7 grams per liter. Since 2020 it ships in a molded paper case, nine times lighter than a gift box, which also keeps light off the clear glass.
Ruinart describes lemon, pear, peach, white flowers, ginger and pink peppercorn, then ripe citrus and tropical fruit with a long, delicate finish.
If you prefer red fruit, the Ruinart Brut Rosé is its sibling; for pure Chardonnay, buy the Blanc de Blancs.
The house says to serve it around 8°C, with seafood or a citrusy sea bass carpaccio.
