Joseph Phelps first made Insignia in 1974, and it is often called Napa's original proprietary Bordeaux-style blend. The blend changes each year depending on the vintage.
Moët Hennessy agreed to buy Joseph Phelps Vineyards in June 2022, so the 2022 is the first Insignia under its ownership. Ryan Knoth made it from six estate vineyards, including Banca Dorada in Rutherford and the Yountville estate. It is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec, aged 24 months in new French oak. It's 14.5% alcohol.
The winery describes berry and spice, coffee and cocoa, savory herb and tobacco, warm spice on the palate, firm tannins and a long finish.
For a collector, this is one of the best-known names in Napa. For a single-vineyard alternative, see Stag’s Leap S.L.V..
Wine Advocate gives it close to 20 years. Decant it for two hours and serve with a rib roast.
It's also listed with our fine and rare wine, and the rest of our Cabernet Sauvignon is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
