The first Earthquake wine was a Zinfandel from an old Lodi vineyard planted around the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and the name stuck to the whole big-and-bold line. This is its Cabernet Sauvignon.
Michael David Winery belongs to brothers Michael and David Phillips, fifth-generation Lodi growers whose family has farmed there since the 1860s. The grapes are grown under Lodi Rules sustainability standards. The 2022 spent 18 months in oak and is 15% alcohol, so it's built to be ripe and generous.
The winery describes deep ruby color, raspberry crème brûlée and cedar box on the nose, then wild huckleberry, cherry pie and buttery croissant on a full-bodied palate, with an oak-driven finish.
If you like big, lush Cabernet, this is the Lodi bottle to buy. For the same ripeness at a lower price, try Three Finger Jack.
Serve it a few degrees cool, around 62°F, so the alcohol doesn't take over. Barbecue ribs or a peppered steak can handle it.
