Palmes d'Or is Nicolas Feuillatte's prestige cuvée, in its knobbly bottle. The house describes it as a duel between Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims.
The 2008 is half Pinot Noir and half Chardonnay, with Chardonnay from Montgueux bridging the two. Palmes d'Or is almost entirely Grand Cru fruit and spends about ten years in the cellar in Chouilly. The house's current release is 2009, so this 2008 is a back vintage with real age.
The house describes white fruit, dried almond, apricot and spice, then red fruit and citrus with a fleshy, tropical touch from Montgueux, linear and built to last.
Against La Grande Dame 2018, the 2008 is older and more evolved; if you like mature Champagne, choose Palmes d'Or.
The house suggests 7 to 8°C as an aperitif or 10 to 12°C with turbot, scallops, white meat or foie gras.
