Azienda Agricola Tornatore is in Castiglione di Sicilia, on the north slope of Mount Etna. The family has worked Etna vineyards since 1865, and Giuseppe Tornatore bought the north-facing vineyards in the early 2000s.
The wine is 100% Carricante from terraced vineyards on volcanic sand, though sources give different elevations. The grapes are hand-harvested, lightly destemmed and softly pressed, and the must is cold-settled and fermented at 15 to 16°C. The wine then spends about three months on its fine lees and is aged in concrete, with no oak. The 2024 is 12.5% alcohol with 2 g/l of residual sugar, so it's dry.
The producer, quoted by its Ontario agent Nicholas Pearce Wines, describes pleasant hints of grapefruit, white peach and herbs, with a fresh, textured, strongly mineral palate.
Against Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina 2024, Tornatore is a volcanic Etna white and costs more; for mineral, unoaked Carricante, choose Tornatore.
Retailer Callmewine suggests serving it at 8 to 10°C and drinking it young. Try it with grilled fish, shellfish or pasta with vegetables.
