Bourbon is a variety of whiskey made in America that is barrel-aged and distilled from corn. The name comes from an area with historical significance known as Bourbon County, Kentucky. It dates back to the 18th century and generally is associated with Kentucky. Tennessee also has a whiskey which is considered Bourbon and some may use the name Bourbon on their labels. By law, all Bourbons must contain at least two-thirds corn and be aged for a minimum of four years.

Small batch bourbons refer to the small number of bottles produced from each batch. Generally, small batch bourbons are associated with the area of Kentucky in which most traditional whiskeys and bourbons are produced, and some of the best brands of small-batch bourbons include Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, Bookers, and Baker's. Many small-batch bourbons are just as good (or better) than the mass-market varieties that are easier to find. For example, the 2005 Knob Creek bourbon was scored 95 points by Wine Enthusiast.
